Frequently Asked Questions & Travel Tips

Planning your journey on El Transcantabrico Gran Lujo? Here are answers to the most common questions from our guests. As Official Representatives of RENFE, Palace Tours is your trusted partner for booking Spain’s most luxurious train experience.

Booking & Reservations

Palace Tours is the Official Representative of RENFE (Spanish Railways) in the United States. This means you get instant confirmations, the best available rates, expert advice from specialists who have traveled on these trains, and full-service support including hotels, transfers, and extensions. We’ve been booking Spanish luxury trains for over 25 years.

We recommend booking 6-12 months in advance for the best selection of dates and suite preferences. The Gran Lujo only has 14 suites for 28 guests, so popular departure dates sell out quickly. Early booking also qualifies you for our Early Bird discounts.

Cancellation policies vary by how far in advance you cancel. Generally: 60+ days before departure receives a higher refund percentage, while cancellations closer to departure may forfeit more of the deposit. We strongly recommend travel insurance which we can arrange for you. Contact us for specific terms.

We accept all major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express), bank transfers, and checks. A deposit is required at booking with the balance due typically 60 days before departure. We can also arrange payment plans for your convenience.

Absolutely! We’re a full-service travel agency. We can book your international flights, pre and post-train hotel stays, transfers, car rentals, and even extended tours of Spain or Portugal. Many guests add nights in San Sebastian, Santiago de Compostela, Madrid, or Barcelona.

Yes! We specialize in group bookings for families, friends, and special interest groups. With only 28 guests per departure, private charters are also possible. Contact us for group rates and exclusive arrangements.

Yes, we strongly recommend travel insurance for all bookings. It protects your investment in case of trip cancellation, interruption, medical emergencies, or lost luggage. We can arrange comprehensive coverage through our trusted insurance partners.

About the Train & Suites

Each Deluxe Suite is approximately 12 square meters (128.7 sq ft)—the largest suites of any luxury train in Spain. Suites feature a sitting area, double or twin beds, private bathroom with hydro-massage shower and steam sauna, minibar, safe, TV, and climate control.

Yes! Each suite can be configured with either a double bed (150×200cm) or two twin beds. Please specify your preference when booking. An extra bed for children under 14 is also available upon request.

Wi-Fi is available in the lounge cars. However, we encourage guests to disconnect and enjoy the stunning scenery of Northern Spain’s Green Coast. Mobile phone coverage is generally good throughout the route.

No! The train parks at a station each night, so your sleep will not be disturbed by movement or noise. You’ll wake up refreshed and ready for each day’s adventures. This is one of the unique features that distinguishes Spanish luxury trains.

The Gran Lujo features four beautifully appointed lounge carriages: a Pub Car with bar and dance floor for evening entertainment, a Quiet Lounge for relaxed conversation, a Library with books and newspapers, and a Game Lounge. All feature panoramic windows and comfortable seating.

The train uses 220 volts with European-style plugs (Type C/F). We recommend bringing a universal adapter. Your suite will have outlets for charging devices.

Practical Information & Travel Tips

Pack comfortable walking shoes for excursions, layers for variable weather (Northern Spain can be cool even in summer), smart casual attire for dinners, and perhaps one dressier outfit for the farewell gala. Don’t forget: camera, sunscreen, hat, light rain jacket, and any medications. Luggage space is limited—one medium suitcase per person is recommended.

The dress code is smart casual. During the day, comfortable clothing for sightseeing is appropriate. For dinners, smart casual attire is expected—collared shirts for men, no shorts or flip-flops. The farewell dinner is a bit more formal, though a jacket and tie are not required.

All meals are included: lavish buffet breakfasts, gourmet lunches, and elegant dinners. Meals are served either on board or at carefully selected restaurants showcasing regional cuisine. All meals include wine, coffee, tea, and liqueurs. Special dietary requirements can be accommodated with advance notice.

Yes! All guided excursions, entrance fees to monuments and museums, and luxury coach transportation are included. Expert multilingual guides accompany each excursion. This is truly an all-inclusive experience.

The train involves some steps to board, and excursions include walking on cobblestones and stairs at historic sites. Guests should be able to walk moderate distances. If you have specific mobility concerns, please contact us to discuss whether this journey is suitable for you.

The Gran Lujo operates from April through October. Spring (April-May) offers mild weather and blooming landscapes. Summer (June-August) is warmest with longer days. Fall (September-October) has pleasant temperatures and harvest season. Northern Spain’s ‘Green Coast’ is beautiful year-round but can be rainy—pack layers!

Almost everything is included, so extras are minimal. Gratuities are not required but are appreciated for exceptional service—typically €50-100 per person for the week to be shared among the crew. You may want a small amount for souvenirs or drinks beyond what’s included.
