Day 1-Your journey begins in León
Arrive in León, a fascinating city that is full of history, and is famous for several monumental buildings, including the Real Colegiata de San Isidoro, San Marcos and more. After the welcome reception, check in and settle into your cabin on board El Transcantabrico and depart for León. Upon arrival, enjoy your lunch followed by a visit to the Iron and Steel Industry Museum. Dinner and overnight in Cistierna.
Day 2-Admire the masterpieces of Carrión de los Condes
Enjoy breakfast on board as the train travels from Cistierna to Guardo. Upon arrival, board the coach to visit Olmeda's Roman villa and the Palentine Romanesque art in Carrión de los Condes, and continue onwards to Frómista, stopping for lunch in Villalcázar de Sirga en route. Rejoin the train in Mataporquera, where you can marvel at the view from your window as the train winds around the edge of the fascinating Ebro Dam and the beautiful marshland region of Las Merindades to Villasana de Mena. Dinner and overnight in Villasana de Mena.
Day 3-City tours of Bilbao and Santander
Breakfast is served on board as the train makes its way through the Valley of Mena and the lands of Vizcaya to reach Bilbao, a modern city where the river searches for the sea. Depart the train for a city tour, including a visit to the famous Guggenheim Museum (only for tours in July and August, as the museum is closed on Mondays during the rest of the year), and Torre de Loizaga in Galdames which houses the largest collection of Rolls Royce vehicles in the world. Have lunch on board the train as it travels to Santander, capital of Cantabria, a beautiful coastal city with an enchanting past. Enjoy a city tour followed by dinner. There is an optional excursion to the local Casino after dinner.
Day 4-Travel back in time to Santillana del Mar
The train arrives in Cabezon de la Sal this morning after breakfast. Disembark the train for a coach transfer to Santillana del Mar, a picturesque medieval village captured in time. The tour includes a visit to the Neocave Museum at Altamira which incorporates a replica of the nearby Stone Age caves famous for their prehistoric paintings. Enjoy a delicious lunch in Santillana. In the afternoon, continue by train from Cabezon de la Sal to the province of Asturias for a visit to the beautiful seaside resort town of Llanes. Pass through Ribadesella for dinner in Cangas de Onis and overnight in Arriondas.
Day 5-Deep into the heart of Asturias
Arrive today into the heart of Asturias, a beautiful region characterized by its steep rocky seaside cliffs and mountainous interior. Depart via coach up to the magnificent Picos de Europa National Park. Here you may visit the lakes, the sanctuary of Covadonga and then continue onwards to Cangas de Onis. Lunch is served on the train. Later arrive in Oviedo, the capital of the Principality that boasts a unique collection of the Pre-Romanesque monuments. Dinner and night in Oviedo.
Day 6-Journey to the charming city of Gijon
A short trip brings us from Oviedo to Gijon, the Asturian seaside town. After lunch your rail journey continues onwards to Luarca, the "White Town" of the Green Coast, where dinner is served.
Day 7-The majestic beauty of Ribadeo
This morning, travel further along the rugged coast to Ribadeo, where you may visit the Catedrales beach. Ribadeo is the first city of the province of Galicia on the border with Asturias, set majestically on the mouth of the River Eo. The landscape from here along the coast is called the "Rias Altas" or "Upper Estuaries" and is awe-inspiring. After lunch in Ribadeo, continue by train to the pretty walled village of Viveiro, viewpoint of San Roque. Enjoy dinner and stay overnight.
Day 8-Your journey ends in Santiago de Compostela
El Transcantabrico travels from Viveiro to Ferrol on the last leg of your epic rail journey. Upon arrival in Ferrol, board the coach bound for your last destination, Santiago de Compostela. A city tour entreats us to savor the beauty of the old quarter, the Obradoiro Square, the Platerias and the Cathedral, the destination of the important 9th century medieval pilgrimage route, the Way of St. James. Bid a fond farewell to your new-found friends as this memorable journey comes to an end.
